Build the asset, not just the audience.

A growing audience can feel like progress, even when nothing else is growing alongside it. The numbers move. The notifications arrive. But a useful question remains: what are people able to do because they found your work?

Visibility matters. Without it, even a remarkable product can remain invisible. But visibility on its own is fragile. Algorithms change, platforms change their rules, and attention moves somewhere else.

Give attention a destination

The practical alternative is to build something that remains valuable beyond a single post. That might be a useful article someone can find through search, a newsletter they have chosen to receive, a simple tool they return to, or a business that solves a recurring problem.

Each of these creates a different kind of asset. A searchable article can attract someone months later. A newsletter gives readers a direct way to hear from you. A product transforms an idea into an outcome.

Attention is the beginning of a relationship, not the end of a strategy.

A simple test

Before spending another hour optimizing a post, ask what happens after someone reads it. Is there a helpful next step? Can they explore a deeper explanation? Can they try something? Can they join a conversation that continues next week?

You do not need a large audience to answer these questions. In fact, starting small makes it easier to see what people actually need.

Build for the person behind the impression. Then make it easy for that person to find you again.
